A traditional engagement ring is a silver band with a diamond. Of course the diamonds vary by size, shape and even color but you can have a lot more options with a non-traditional ring. Celebrities seem to be going non-traditional these days as well; in my opinion, they are capable of holding more personal meaning than a traditional one. Below are some ways that you can make your ring unique, personal and meaningful.

A non-traditional design allows you to have a little fun! You can design the ring yourself and make the band or stone settings into patterns you wouldn’t normally see in a jewelry store. Designs like this bring up thoughts of family heirlooms and vintage jewelry.

Go to any jewelry store and look at rings with rose gold, yellow gold, white gold, palladium and platinum bands; these are less common than silver bands. Be sure to try each one on to make sure you like it against your skin tone. Also keep in mind the color stone you want so the band doesn’t clash with it, either.
Birthstones and Their Meanings

Choose your engagement ring’s stone based on your or your fiance’s birthstone for a personal touch; even better if you have the same birthstone! I used emerald as an example because that’s my birthstone
January – Garnet, eternal friendship and trust July – Ruby, brings health, wisdom, wealth and success in love
February – Amethyst, keeps you clear-headed and quick-witted August – Peridot, brings power, influence and a wonderful year
March – Aquamarine, keeps you calm and level-headed September – Sapphire, protects loved ones from envy and harm
April – Diamond, brings balance, clarity and abundance October – Tourmaline Opal
May – Emerald, brings foresight, good fortune and youth November – Topaz Citrine, supports vitality, health and brings hope
June – Pearl Alexandrite/Moonstone, good fortune December – Tanzanite Zircon Turquise, protects travelers from disease and injury
Masculine Wedding Ring
Here’s a unique ring idea for the groom! A very symbolic knot instead of a simple circular band. This particular ring is a little dainty but could be used as inspiration for a more masculine design.
